Antonio and Bassanio

What kind of relationship exists between Antonio and Bassanio?

Antonio and Bassanio have a very strong relationship, they are best friends who love one another (in a non-homosexual way). Bassanio, who likes a very wealthy woman Portian, asks for money from Antonio so he can compete with the rest of her suitors. Antonio always lets Bassanio borrow money but he doesn't have any more to spare for him but says that if he can find a decent loan then he will take care of it. This is where Shylock comes in. Shylock is a Jewish lender who agrees to give Antonio a loan, the twist is that if Antonio can not pay this loan off then he will owe him 1 pound of flesh...His heart.
Antonio - Content, in fait. I'll seal to such a bond, And say there is much kindness in the Jew. (pg. 36 lines 164-165)
Bassanio - You shall not seal such a bond for me! I'll rather dwell in my necessity.
(pg. 36 lines 166-167)
Even though Antonio is threatened with his life if he takes the bond, he decides to take it to help out his friend. This shows how close these two men are, Antonio is risking his life to help Bassanio.

Pip and Estella

In chapters 38 and 39 Pip discovered that Dremmel was Estella's most important suitor. Pip eventually came to the realization that he didn't love Estella anymore. This will be hard for Pip because he has dedicated his entire life to becoming a gentleman just so he can be with her. When Pip realizes he doesn't love her he sees how miserable he has been. " ...I heard of her often in town, and I used often to take her and the Brandleys on the water; there were picnics, fete days, plays, operas, concerts, parties, all sorts of pleasures, through which I pursued her - and they were all miseries to me" (301). Now that he sees this I think he will change, he can do what he really wants to do and not be influenced by Estella. It's probably a good thing that he realized he no longer loved her. Estella on the other hand, I don't think, will change one bit. From the beginning of the book we have seen Ms. Havisham telling her to break men's hearts. She has obviously succeeded with Pip, nd enjoys it to some extent. We also see Estella's relationship with Ms. Havisham (not the best relationship) but Estella still has to listen to what she says so shewill continue to do anything to make men miserable for her.

Blog 2: Estella

The name Estella suits the character very well. When I think of the name Estella, I think of the word stellar. The exact definition of stellar is "star like" and "leading". Estella is a girl who was taken in by Ms. Havisham, a very wealthy woman. When Pip meets Estella he instantly thinks that she's pretty. When I think of stars, I think of the words "shine" and "beauty". Due to Estella's social status she "shines" to many people, such as the "common" folk. Also when I think of stars, I think of famous people, when I think of famous people I think of bossy/snobby-ness, Estella is a very snobby person and calls Pip a commoner. When Ms. Havisham asks Pip what he thought about Estella, he responded, "I think she is very proud...I think she is very insulting" (61). Also the word "leading" describes Estella very well. When she has an opinion she sticks with it and doesn't follow anyone else (except maybe Ms. Havisham, but that's because she has to). Someone's name can say a lot about them.

Great Expectations Blog 1

Pip - “…I felt fearfully sensible of the great convenience that the Hulks were handy for me. I was clearly on my way there. I had begun by asking questions, and I was going to rob Mrs. Joe.”

In Great Expectations, you meet the main character Pip. Pip is a young boy who's family is mostly dead expect his older sister, Mrs. Joe who "raised him by hand". When Pip is down in the graveyard he meets a convict that has escaped from the jail. This convict threatens Pip and tells him to bring him whittles, food, and a file so that he could get his ankle brace off. The convict tells him that if he doesn't bring him the stuff by the following day, there's another convict that will rip out his liver and eat it. Pip is immediately frightened and runs home from the graveyard. He says he's going to rob Mrs. Joe because he needs to get food for the convict, he plans on taking food from her. When Pip is home he stuffs bread down his pants at the dinner table while eating. When everyone is fast asleep, he goes down to the pantry and steels brandy, a pork pie, and other things. After steeling he immediately becomes guilty and is bothered by this for quite some time.
